The Pilates bar consists of a basic piece with a bar that is wide enough to be held behind you, across your back, and generally about 90 cm broad. Each end of the bar is supported by a resistance band that lowers to the floor. They include a foot loop into which you step to hold the bands to the ground using your own bodyweight. It’s typically packaged as a Pilates bar kit with resistance bands and other accessories, such as a carry bag.
How does it work?
The bar pins resistance bands to the ground using your own body weight, so you’ll have to work harder when performing exercises. If you were to repeat the same movement without the bar immediately afterwards, it would feel a lot easier.
Resistance bands are easy to carry around. They are lightweight and not as bulky as barbells. You don’t feel like you’re holding anything when using resistance bands, since they’re light. Because of the foot straps, the resistance band stretches while you stand up, making the motion more difficult than it would be otherwise. The disadvantage is that when you add extra resistance to each move, you get a more difficult workout, like working out with weights or doing cardio at home, and as a result, you will feel stronger since you’ve pushed your muscles harder than by using bodyweight only. You will still be working your core muscles, strengthening your level of fitness and muscle tone as you would in a typical Pilates class. You’ll simply be adding extra difficulty to your normal bodyweight exercises.
Is it possible to gain muscle with a Pilates bar?
If you practice Pilates on a regular basis, your muscle strength will plateau at a certain point. To develop additional muscle, you’ll need more equipment to place your muscles under greater strain.
